When dealing with home HVAC systems, vents and HVAC ductwork are the keys to a comfortable life, but that’s not all. It can even be worse when they are installed incorrectly. Installation of Vents and HVAC Ductwork
Regardless if you plan on installing a duct system in a new home or a retrofitted one, select a system designed by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) or any equivalent standard.
Hire a licensed HVAC contractor for the installation of your home’s air distribution system. They are knowledgeable and skillful in doing HVAC installations apart from also knowing the latest industry practices in maintaining the mechanical integrity of your HVAC system.
Look for the ducts in your living space if possible. It may be hard to do that among retrofitted ones, just make sure your insulation is in excellent shape. Check for the R-value and make sure it’s eight at the minimum.
Avoid leaks by sealing your furnace and duct system. Make sure you pay attention to the various joints and connections.
Repair and Maintenance of Vents and the HVAC Ductwork
Be wary of ductworks that have dark areas on its insulation since it indicates it may be in dire need of a repair or replacement because of cracks or leaks.

Heating and cooling systems at some point require professional services to ensure its efficiency. Whether the service is for an emergency repair or an annual checkup, this could also be a tricky one to make. Once a repair gets done for your HVAC system, it’s really relaxing to know that you can get back to your daily routine without any more heating and cooling - related problems. Most of the HVAC companies offer extended service contracts or agreements on maintenance. Accepting these can either be a blessing or a total waste of money. What should you choose then? Here are some information that you need to know so you can avoid wasting money.
- It is important to know what an HVAC service contract is and what exactly it covers. Like what most contracts are, an HVAC service contract is an agreement between you and the service provider in which you pay them money for services on your HVAC system.
Most service contracts include checkups and tune-ups which will set the system at its best condition. Some would include parts and labor for the problems that they will find during the checkup while some will even include emergency service.
Some of these contracts have priority treatment which guarantees that you will be able to save time and discomfort if the air conditioner fails during summer or the heater blows out during the dead of the winter. Note that the more services a contract includes, the more costly it will be. No matter how long and boring the service contract may seem to look, it is imperative that all consumers read service contracts as all the important details are included in the contract.
- What are the benefits that you get from a regular HVAC maintenance? With regular maintenance, the technician will be able to clean the filters regularly and spot any potential problems which will give them a heads up of what to change or what to fix. With all that being done on your system regularly, it is an assurance that the system will be efficient.
Furthermore, with a technician being able to identify and fix issues while they are still minor, can save yourself from bigger problems and more expensive repairs in the future.
- How much are you going to spend on a service contract? In some cases, the cost of the repair is much less than that of the service contracts. Depending on the number of services, the price ranges from $150 to $500 per year. If you have a new system that is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, the cost may not be worthwhile as major repairs will be covered by the manufacturer. Although, as a term of their warranty, there are some manufacturers that will require routine maintenance.
Remember that with service contracts, you will pay the fee every year whether your system needs a repair or not. If the system works perfectly for 5 years but you pay $250 per year, you may be paying more than it is worth.
- Learn more about the service contract before you purchase. Before you give a yes to service contracts, it is better to calculate. Will paying a yearly fee for the service contract be equal or less than paying for the service out of pocket?
Service contracts with emergency repairs for a reasonable price can be purchased. Service contracts that don’t will make you think twice.
Always read the fine print and identify the actions that you may do that will nullify the contract.
With enough knowledge about the service contract that is being offered, you will surely come up with a very wise decision. Remember to always be sure that the company you’re signing up with is reliable, trustworthy and honest.
Save money by doing your own air conditioner troubleshooting to address common cooling issues.
Once the intense summer heat hits town, it is crucial to have a fully-functional cooling system in place just to survive. But because of the increase in workload, your unit may break down or stop working all of a sudden. That’s when you have to be ingenious and do your own air conditioner troubleshooting to address cooling problems you often face during summer. Not all the time you need a professional to do some easy fixes on your system. Try some of these air conditioner troubleshooting yourself:
Air condenser is not running.
When faced with this problem, inspect the power to ensure you have plugged your unit to an electrical source. If it is connected, examine for a tripped circuit or a blown fuse. Turn the power back on and wait if it starts.
Another likely reason is not setting up the thermostat correctly. Reduce the thermostat’s temperature about five degrees lower and check if it kicks on. If it doesn’t, blame a faulty compressor or motor as the cause. If that’s the case, it’s beyond your limited knowledge and skills so better contact an expert as soon as you can.
Insufficient air cooling.
If you notice your AC can’t condition your home sufficiently, try lowering your thermostat about five degrees lower. If the problem persists, the cause may be a filthy evaporator. Clean your evaporator carefully and allow it to run for several hours. If that does not solve the problem, your air conditioner may be smaller than what your living space requires.
Remember that the extreme temperature outside can affect the effectiveness of your cooling unit. If the outside temperature is at 100 degrees or higher, it will be hard for your AC to maintain a 62 degrees temperature within your home regardless of the amount of cold air it blows especially if your home has plenty of windows that let in plenty of sunlight. Always check with an expert before deciding whether to change your cooling unit especially if the summer heat is putting too much strain on your AC.
Air conditioner runs but does not cool.
If your home still stays warm even if your AC is running, inspect your thermostat. Then, check your condenser whether it is clogged or filthy? Clean and take off the blockage if there’s any. Tall grass, weeds, and other similar airborne particles can clog your unit’s condenser.
If your AC still does not deliver cold air, it may be due to an insufficient refrigerant level or a faulty compressor. Remember that only a professional cooling technician can address issues like these.
Air conditioner cycles on and off constantly.
Again, it is often due to a clogged or filthy condenser unit. Just clean your unit and get rid of obstructions to fix the problem.

You can clean your unit without requiring the assistance of a professional as long as you are familiar with the basic parts of your unit.
